Financial Fraud Prevention for Employees
BinariumCourse Code: FIN202 | Organization: Binarium Corp | Duration: Approximately 2.5 Hours | Language: English
Financial fraud costs Canadian organizations billions of dollars every year — and the vast majority of schemes succeed not because of sophisticated technology, but because employees lacked the knowledge to recognize the warning signs. According to the ACFE 2024 Report to the Nations, organizations lose an estimated 5% of annual revenues to fraud, and the median scheme runs for 12 months before detection. This course changes that. By the end, every employee in your organization will be equipped to recognize fraud patterns, apply practical controls, and escalate concerns before losses mount.
What You Will Learn
This course is structured across five chapters covering the full spectrum of financial fraud awareness and prevention:
- Chapter 1 — Fraud Fundamentals: The definition and real cost of organizational fraud; the Fraud Triangle (Pressure, Opportunity, Rationalization) and how each element is addressed by controls; ACFE 2024 statistics on fraud frequency, loss, and detection; Canada's Criminal Code Section 380 and the legal consequences of fraud; the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) and its 2024 reported losses.
- Chapter 2 — Internal Fraud: Asset Misappropriation: The spectrum of occupational fraud — skimming, cash larceny, and fraudulent disbursements; ghost employee schemes and payroll manipulation; expense reimbursement fraud categories (fictitious, inflated, duplicate, mischaracterized); shell vendor and invoice fraud; kickback schemes in procurement; financial statement fraud and its characteristics; Benford's Law as a detection tool.
- Chapter 3 — External Fraud Against Organizations: Business Email Compromise (BEC) — how it works, scale of losses (FBI IC3 2024: $2.9B+), and prevention; vendor banking change fraud and the mandatory verification callback procedure; cheque fraud, cheque kiting, and Positive Pay; account takeover (ATO) fraud and MFA; SIM swapping attacks; synthetic identity fraud; external invoice fraud red flags.
- Chapter 4 — Emerging Fraud Threats: Deepfake audio and video fraud — the 2024 Hong Kong case study ($25M USD loss); AI-generated phishing and why grammar is no longer a reliable red flag; cryptocurrency investment scams and "pig butchering" schemes; the CAFC 2024 breakdown of fraud by dollar value (investment fraud as the top category); pre-agreed code words as a deepfake defense.
- Chapter 5 — Controls, Prevention, and Your Role: Segregation of Duties (SoD) — the four functions and why they must be separated; incompatible duty combinations; three-way match in accounts payable; approval threshold exploitation and detection; whistleblower hotlines and the ACFE finding that they reduce median losses by 50%; vendor master hygiene controls; compensating controls for small organizations; when and how to escalate.
Learning Objectives
Upon completing this course, you will be able to:
- Apply the Fraud Triangle to analyze organizational risk and identify which element is most directly addressable through internal controls
- Recognize the major categories of asset misappropriation — including ghost employees, expense fraud, shell vendors, and kickbacks — and describe the controls that prevent each
- Identify the red flags for Business Email Compromise, vendor banking change fraud, and external invoice fraud, and apply the correct verification procedure
- Explain how deepfake technology and AI-generated phishing change the fraud threat landscape and describe appropriate countermeasures
- Apply Segregation of Duties principles to identify incompatible function combinations and propose compensating controls where full SoD is not feasible
- Execute the correct response when encountering suspicious invoices, vendor change requests, or unexpected payment instructions
- Describe Canada's Criminal Code Section 380 obligations and explain when and how to report fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC)
- Use Benford's Law conceptually to understand how financial data analytics can detect fabricated numbers
